Legacy Group Option
You will choose a Pillar of Character to create a video about the "ups and downs" of the Pillar in Ocean Township High School using behaviors you witness in school or at school related events. You will incorporate many of the skills practiced in IT in the next 2 weeks to accomplish this. Working bell to bell and actively contributing to the daily work for the project each day is mandatory. Staring at someone's screen and claiming you are working together, using the computer or phone for personal interests, or logging off before the bell to end class rings will result in a deduction in participation points for the quarter. Here is a sample of what you will do submitted by former IT All Stars.
Day 1: Project Intro
Read the scoring for a group project. Decide if you wish to do a group project or individual project.
- If you choose a group project, form a group of 3 (4 only with the approval of the instructor). Keep in mind that the entire group is responsible for all of the project points. By choosing a group, you have forfeited your right to points not earned due to another group member's failure of completing their responsibility or lack of "correctness" in completing the responsibility. All group members are responsible to check each other's work!
Select a Pillar and browse topic or topics that might fit the Pillar:

- One group member-- create a Final Project folder. Share it with your partners and both of your instructors by inviting them with emails and give them permission to edit. Inside this folder, create the following folders: Pictures, Narration, Music, Research, and Video (you do not have to set the share settings-- they automatically are shared with your partners since they are inside the Final Project folder).
- Each member must now go to their Drive, Shared with Me; take the shared folder and drag and drop it into Drive, IT folder on the left task menu so it is easily accessible each day.
One group member, open the Planning Sheet I have shared with you. You can only view this. Select File, Make a copy. Rename the document with your name and Planning Sheet . . . eg: John Smith Planning Sheet.
- Select File, Move to and move it to your Drive, IT, Final Project folder.
- Everyone in the group and your instructors now have access and permission to edit since it has the same permission as the folder.
- All group members must brainstorm and complete the planning sheet. Remember, the subject of the video is OTHS! Keep in mind that you are educating, inspiring, and encouraging your peers to do the right thing.
Day 2: Gather Info and visuals
- Watch how this student video used their graphics effectively.
- Planning sheet approved by the end of the period.
- Gather required research about the pillar. Share with the group by filling out a Research document I have shared with you. You can only view this. Select File, Make a copy. Rename the document with your name and Research . . . eg: John Smith Research.
Copy and paste useful information and keep track of where it is from by listing source info or the URL so it will be easy to do a bibliography down the road.
- Take "staged" still pics of positive and negative behaviors in OTHS. Look at hallway murals and highlights in cases etc to use as pics for your topic.Get OTHS pics from a Google search like the building, Spartan logo, Bid Red logo, sports etc. The Hallways and Walls of OT have plenty of inspirational pictures, trophies, quotes etc. also. The more you connect to OT visually, the better! Put all pics in the shared project picture folder. DO NOT PUT THEM ON A DOCUMENT . . . upload each as an individual file.
- Find and images via the web that are also appropriate. Share via Google Drive with partners by uploading each picture to the shared project picture folder from Day 1.Choose pictures with high resolution-- a small resolution (eg. 60 x 40) will be very blurry in your movie editor.
- "Staging" a movie clip is an option, but must maintain the serious tone of the intended project. Interviews can be useful, but need to maintain the intended serious tone of the project as well. Using humor to emphasize your point is quite a different thing from demeaning the topic by making light of it-- few are capable of doing this; stay within your skill set!
Day 3: Begin Producing Movie
- Finish gathering research. Keep track of sources on your research document in the shared research folder.
- Finish gathering pictures, film, interviews.
- Create the poll question the group devised in the planning sheet via Mr. Rafter's Edmodo.
- Place pictures, film clips, on movie timeline.
- Create an introduction of the Pillar and OTHS (use graphics like a picture of the HS, Spartan logo, Big Rd etc.) in the movie editor with pictures/ film and text.
- Add transitions between all visuals in the movie editor.
Day 4: Produce and Refine
- Watch a student example of music that sets an appropriate tone, a graph that meets the rules, and integration of text, still pictures and film. Watch another sample that uses narration, music, and the graph effectively.
- Everyone take polls in Edmodo. Sign in and add a group (+ sign on left ) using the code (TBA)
- Put desired text from research and your thoughts on the pictures in Movie Maker.
- Write narration from research and polls. Consider the visual content on the movie timeline when writing pieces of narration. Do not "read" text on visuals as part of narration . . . take the viewer beyond the visuals and text and be thought provoking.
- Use Internet Explorer or Chrome to select music, download and save music in H drive and share w/ partners via Google Drive. DO NOT PUT THE MUSIC IN THE MOVIE YET! You may borrow music from the folders linked below. Download the selections you want to use, save in your "H" Drive, and then upload to share with the group in the shared Google Drive Music folder. Be sure it is long enough in duration to last the entire movie. More than 1 song/ instrumental can be used.
Day 5: Graph(s) and Narration
- Create graph(s) from polls (go to JR and he will give you final statistics from Day 3) or statistics from research and share w/ group via Google Drive. A pie chart is the most appropriate for polls . . . we made pie charts for Time Management -- "oh, so that's why you did that; so we'd be able to make one for the final exam." Yes young Skywalker, now you understand the power of the force! See the Graph Requirements.
- Record/ film narration and share .wav or .mp3 files w/ Group via Google Drive in the project folder.
- Create the Bibliography from research sources. and share w/ group via Google Drive in the project folder.
- Add graph(s) and credits/ closing to your movie. Also, be sure the movie has a "call to action." Inspire OTHS students to do the right thing and to live the pillar of character both inside and outside of school. For instance, add a question after the "call to action" to prompt the viewer; for example, How will you contribute to the legacy of the Class of 2017?
Day 6: Audio/ Visual Edit
- Edit narration. Get the unedited narration from JR's shared folder. Download your narration via Internet Explorer to your "H" Drive. Upload to your Google Drive Shared Project folder as a backup. Edit the narration using Audacity or GarageBand. Export the final narration as .wav or .mp3 if you are using Movie Maker. If you are using MAC and Garageband it will export as a .m4a file. That will be fine for iMovie, but will need to be converted to .mp3 for Movie Maker if your are on Windows . . . ask JR to convert for you if necessary; save edited sections in your "H" Drive and shared Google Drive Final Project folder.
- Group members edit and approve the Bibliography. (Use the link to see how to submit the Bibliography)
Day 7: Music Edit
- Add final narration to the movie. Export the movie with the narration if using Movie Maker. Then open a new Movie Maker Project and insert the exported movie in this new project.
- Make a list of narration timing on a document in the shared Google Drive Project folder. Use these timing to edit the rise and fall of music volumes in the next bullet.
- Edit text and time length of pictures etc. to run the desired length of the movie. See the time requirements on the scoring page.
- Create music track to run the length of the movie and edit volume for the narration sections.
- Complete Extra Credit for the Qtr. and Exam.
Day 8: Final Edit
*Describe positive and negative scenarios/ behaviors related to the Pillar.
*Physical/ emotional effects of behaviors that violate the Pillar.
*Effects of positive behaviors related to the Pillar.
*A "Call to Action" and credit to group members' roles at the end.
*Check spelling, grammar, etc. must follow standard English class convention.
- Does your movie cover the following before adding the music track?
*Describe positive and negative scenarios/ behaviors related to the Pillar.
*Physical/ emotional effects of behaviors that violate the Pillar.
*Effects of positive behaviors related to the Pillar.
*A "Call to Action" and credit to group members' roles at the end.
*Check spelling, grammar, etc. must follow standard English class convention.
- You can't always lay a music track over a narration track w/ Movie Maker. Before adding music, Export the Movie to your "H" Drive with narration only using the dropdown and choose Save Movie, For computer. As a backup, upload it to the shared Google Drive folder from your "H" Drive.
- Add music track to movie by opening a NEW Movie Maker project. Drag and drop the exported .mpeg with narration from your "H" Drive into the new project. Now drag and drop the edited music track into this project . . . the timings should match if you edited properly. If correct, save the project with a new name so you do not overwrite the one with narration.
- Perform final edit and play movie from start to finish.
- Check movie against the scoring checklist.
- Save the project as a new name if using Movie Maker so that you don't overwrite the one with narration.
Day 9 and 10: Produce the "Working File"
- Last chance to edit the bibliography. Check comments on your document from instructor.
- Export/ Share the movie as an .mpeg, .mp4, etc. with a name different than the one with just the narration and share w/ group via Google Drive.
- After sharing, each member play the movie separately on their own computer from Google Drive and check against the scoring checklist one final time.
- Upon group agreement, share w/ JR-- do not make the mistake of a sharing a project file that does not work because the group did not complete the first 2 bullets of this step.
- Take the Library Bench mark and use the time to submit Extra Credit
